Residents from the Upper Springfield area are being invited to ‘Meet The Artist’ and discuss a proposed public artwork for the district.
Artist Kevin Killen has been commissioned by Belfast City Council to design a major art piece to be installed at the crossroads of the Springfield Road and the Whiterock Road.
As part of the public consultation process, an open day for local residents had been scheduled to take place at Whiterock Community Centre last week. However, it had to be called off because of the bad weather.
Ideas
The event has now been rearranged for this coming Wednesday (January 13), again at Whiterock Community Centre, starting at 7pm, and residents and local community groups are invited to come along, talk to the artist and share ideas.
Kevin Killen specialises in large-scale sculptural pieces creating striking pieces in both stone and metal, employing modern crafting techniques to enliven public spaces.
He has worked with many communities across Ireland, and his pieces reflect both the history and visions of local communities.
“I hope that the piece will reflect the importance of history and the mountain to the Upper Springfield area, and reflect the character of local people, who all bring great pride and a sense of community to the area,” said Kevin.
This project follows on from earlier work carried out in Upper Springfield and Falls Road as part of Belfast City Council’s ongoing Renewing the Routes programme, including a shop frontage improvement scheme, a new artwork at Sliabh Dubh and the Springhill Park community garden.
Renewing the Routes
The Renewing the Routes programme aims to improve the appearance of the city’s main roads. In Upper Springfield, the project team works closely with local residents and groups to deliver quality improvements which contribute to the environment and the character of the area.
