The Arts Programme of the Upper Springfield Development Trust aims to bring art to the streets of the Upper Springfield
It also aims to address various social, cultural and environmental issues through the imaginative use of public art.
Local groups get the opportunity to work with artists through projects which result in pieces of public artwork for their streets, parks and open spaces.
The project also aims to raise the profile of the area and promote a positive media image.
One recent piece of artwork , ‘An Chroí – the Heart’ Sculpture made by artist Raymond Watson, in conjunction with Suicide Awareness and Support Group, has helped transform an anti – social hotspot into a peaceful and tranquil Garden of Reflection.
Other recent developments have included enhancing the appearance of the entrances to the housing estates in the area through vibrant murals and sculptures, celebrating the culture of the area and promoting the use of the Irish Language.
Integral to all of these projects and initiatives is community participation throughout the whole process of the arts projects, from development through to design and ‘hands-on’ making of the artworks.
To date there have been almost a hundred pieces of vibrant public artworks made and installed on the streets of the Upper Springfield.
The Arts Programme also plays a leading role in celebratory festival events at pivotal times of the year.
